What we would investigate in your catalogue

A good product catalogue should make buying easier. It should not create thousands of near-identical URLs that compete with its best categories.

01

Category architecture

Define a useful hierarchy around product families and buying intent. Separate durable commercial landing pages from combinations that exist only to power filtering.

02

Faceted navigation and canonicals

Map filter parameters, pagination, sort orders and variant URLs. Agree which deserve indexation, which should remain crawlable but not indexed, and which should resolve to canonical destinations.

03

Product templates and structured data

Review product availability, variant presentation, metadata patterns and product structured data against visible information. Prioritise fixes that can be maintained across large inventories.

Where the work starts

Duplicate or weak catalogue URLs, expensive faceted crawling, category hierarchy and product discoverability.

We would first agree the target pages, the technical owner and what we can verify. Implementation effort, third-party access, and any specialist development must be scoped before a fixed commercial commitment.

What a useful first deliverable looks like

Rather than a spreadsheet of generic 'SEO issues', choose one representative product family. Record its current category URLs, filter combinations, product discovery paths, query-to-page evidence and revenue priorities. That sample becomes the basis for an indexation policy that developers and merchandisers can both evaluate.

  • Category opportunity sheet: buyer intent, existing destination, missing decision-making information and the business owner of the change.
  • Filter decision register: example parameter URLs, intended crawl and canonical treatment, discovery risks and the actual verification method.
  • Product-template acceptance sheet: test URLs for title, availability, structured data, canonical, mobile navigation and internal product links.

Any large-catalogue policy should be piloted on a contained section. Fixes to inventory feeds, product imagery or merchandising may require a separate workstream; deleting indexable filter URLs does not solve every product discovery problem.

See Google's faceted-navigation guidance for the crawl implications. It does not prescribe one rule for every retailer.
